The Digital Workplace
An online article published by ThoughtFarmer (2022) states that in 2014, industry analyst Gartner defined a digital workplace as “An ongoing, deliberate approach to delivering a more consumer-like computing environment that is better able to facilitate innovate and flexible working practises”. To put it simply, the digital workplace portable work. As you may be able to tell, the digital workplace is just digital transformation/change but in practise. An example of a digital workplace can be as simple as having a shared working document that co-workers can access and work on at any time or having a video call meeting with your co-workers from home.
Why must we use a Digital Workplace?
While it is a very new concept that may seem scary and unfamiliar, facilitating a digital workplace is a much more efficient and employee friendly way of completing work and helping a business grow. A blog published by elcom titled “8 Great Ways to Use Forms & Workflows to Automate Processes” (2023) explains that using paper and physical forms to keep information is an unnecessary expense on a large scale and clawing through thousands of physical forms to find specific information can become a tenacious task. The author of the blog, Siv Rauv, writes “Sadly, organisations are still being weighed down by inefficient manual and paper-based processes”. For businesses or organisations that refuse to adopt a digital workplace, will find it incredibly difficult to keep up with competition and not be crushed by the ever-evolving digital workplace, especially now that the digital workplace is here to stay. A 2022 article published by Gartner states that “Increasing demands for a more automated workplace have sparked the killer combo of people and technology” (J. Turner, 2022).
